World Test Championship Final: What happens if there is a draw, tie or abandonment
Lord’s has hosted the ODI and T20 World Cup finals long ago. This historic cricket venue in ‎London is now waiting to host the World Test Championship final.
World Test Championship Final: What happens if there is a draw, tie or abandonment
The third cycle (2023-2025 cycle) final of the Test Championship begins tomorrow at Lord’s. Australia and South Africa face off.
Pat Cummins’ Australia is the current champion; his team’s campaign this time is to retain the title. Temba Bavuma has stepped onto the stage of Test excellence for the first time for South Africa. His team’s goal is to snatch the mace-shaped trophy from the Australians and win the global title after 27 years.
However, since it is a Test match, there can be a draw as well as a win or loss. The possibility of a tie cannot be ruled out either. Because, in the 148-year history of Test cricket, Australia’s name is associated with both of the two matches that have been tied! Along with this, there is the rain of cricket’s ‘new enemy’. Matches can be drawn or abandoned due to rain. So, the question that may arise in the minds of cricket fans is, which team will lift the trophy if the World Test Championship final is drawn, tied or abandoned?
The ICC, the world cricket governing body, says that if the final between Australia and South Africa remains undecided in the end, both teams will be declared joint champions. The same rule was applicable in the finals of the first and second rounds.
In order to ensure that results are achieved even if many overs are lost due to rain in the final, a reserve day has been kept for next Monday (June 16). An additional day was also kept for the finals of the previous two rounds.
