Desk Report,
BNP-Jamaat active in Rajbari, Awami League in hiding
Although Awami League leaders and activists have been vocal in Rajbari politics in the past years, after the student-public uprising on August 5, everyone has gone into hiding. Many leaders and activists have been arrested and are in jail. Earlier, BNP leaders and activists were occasionally seen on the streets, but Jamaat-e-Islami was silent. Now Jamaat’s activity is noticeable.

Apart from this, Jatiya Party leaders and activists have not been seen holding any programs except for quietly celebrating the founding anniversary at the party office. The Islamic Movement is trying to remain active in Bangladesh politics. Occasionally, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) stands on the streets with banners with various demands. The Workers’ Party of Bangladesh and JSD have not been seen doing much activity. Apart from this, there is no visible activity of the newly established National Citizens Party (NCP).
BNP-Jamaat, which were cornered in various types of lawsuits during the Awami League’s tenure in Rajbari, have become stronger. The internal conflict of the BNP in Rajbari-1 (Rajbari Sadar and Goalanda) and Rajbari-2 (Pangsha, Baliakandi and Kalukhali) constituencies has reached an extreme level. The open division of the two groups of the BNP has become clear after the separate venue was made of bamboo in the field on February 23 in the presence of national leaders to hold party programs. The presence of former leaders and activists other than the current committee is not seen in the party office located in the district town. In addition, personal offices have been set up in different areas. Possible candidates for the next election are running around in the field.
One faction of the Rajbari BNP is led by former district BNP president and former parliamentarian Ali Newaz Mahmud (Khayyam) and former parliamentarian and former district BNP president Nasirul Haque (Saboo). The other faction is led by Aslam Mia, vice-president of the Central Krishak Dal and joint convener of the district BNP, and Harun Or Rashid, former general secretary of the district BNP.
District BNP convener Liakat Ali told Prothom Alo that the district BNP convener committee was formed on November 25, 2019 in light of the constitution on the instructions of acting chairman Tarique Rahman. Already, committees have been formed in 7 out of 8 units on the basis of councils. The Sadar Upazila Council is still pending, preparations for that are also underway.
