Video of Awami League’s founding anniversary celebration in Shariatpur posted on Facebook, police searching for leaders and activists
The party leaders and activists celebrated the founding anniversary of the Awami League by cutting cakes and chanting slogans in Shariatpur. They held the program at two places in Sadar Upazila in the dark of the night on Monday and Tuesday and then went into hiding again. The video of the incident has been published on the verified Facebook page of Bangladesh Awami League.

In this regard, Helal Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Palang Model Police Station in Sadar, told Prothom Alo, “Despite the ban, some Awami League people celebrated the founding anniversary by cutting cakes in the dark of the night. After we came to know about it, we are trying to identify the two places. Those who spread the video of the program on Facebook are being searched. The police did not find them at their homes. They are on the run. Efforts are being made to arrest those people who held the program.”
After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year, the Awami League held a public program in Jajira under the leadership of former Upazila Parishad Chairman Mubarak Ali Sikder on August 15. After that, the organization did not hold any public programs. However, torchlight processions, posters and protest marches have been held in different places in the district at different times in the dark of night. A district-level leader of the Awami League, who is in hiding, told Prothom Alo on his mobile phone that on the occasion of the 76th founding anniversary of the Awami League, the Chhatra League celebrated it by cutting cakes on the night of June 23 and the Jubo League on the night of June 24 at two places. Since the party’s political activities are now banned, the leaders and activists carried out the party’s programs in the dark of night. A video of the party’s founding anniversary was posted on the verified Facebook page of the Bangladesh Awami League last Monday. The caption of the video reads, ‘On the 76th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Awami League, Shariatpur District Chhatra League’s revolutionary general secretary Rasheduzzaman led the Chhatra League to celebrate its birthday by cutting cakes.’ In addition, the party leaders and activists have spread the video on Facebook. It can be seen that the leaders and activists gathered wearing masks. They raised various slogans in the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina.
