Five people have been arrested on charges of extortion at the residence of Awami League leader and former MP Shammi Ahmed in the capital’s Gulshan area. They were arrested from the Gulshan area around 8 pm on Saturday.

These five are Md. Riyad, Md. Siam, Md. Sadaf, Md. Ibrahim and Md. Aminul. Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman told Prothom Alo that Riyad is the leader of the Joint Private University Convenor Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.OC Hafizur said that on July 17, two leaders of the Joint Private University Convenor Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Riyad and Apu, went to the residence of Awami League leader and former MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan and demanded a ransom of Tk 50 lakh. Shammi Ahmed’s husband was at the residence that day. Riyad, Apu and others threatened him and demanded a ransom of Tk 50 lakh. Later, Shammi Ahmed’s husband also gave a ransom of Tk 10 lakh. They went to collect the remaining amount of the ransom money at around 8 pm tonight. The police, having received information about this in advance, arrested them from the spot. A drive is underway to arrest the rest, the police official said.
