About 32 percent of citizens who availed government services in the past year have been victims of bribery and corruption. This means that they had to avail these government services by paying bribes or through corruption. On average, one in every three people has to pay bribes.

This picture has emerged in the Citizen Perception Survey (CPS) published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on Thursday. On this occasion, BBS organized a program at the Agargaon Statistics Building. Planning Advisor Wahiduddin Mahmud was present as the chief guest. CPS Project Director Rashed-e-Masatahab presented the survey data.

In February, 84,807 men and women from 45,888 households participated in the survey. According to the survey data, the highest incidence of bribery and corruption occurred at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office. Survey participants said that 63.29 percent of citizens who sought services at BRTA in the past year were victims of bribery and corruption. This rate was 61.94 percent at law enforcement agencies, 57.45 percent at passport offices, and 54.92 percent at land registration offices.

The issue of safety also came up in the survey. According to the survey, 84.81 percent of citizens feel safe walking alone around their localities after dark. Women feel less safe than men. According to the survey participants, 80 percent of women feel safe walking alone around their localities. This means that one in five women do not feel safe walking alone in the evening. In addition, 89.53 percent of men feel safe walking alone.
