The specter of match-fixing has now reached the Uttar Pradesh (UP) T20 League in India. 1 crore offer on Instagram for match fixing
According to the complaint submitted to the police, on August 19, Arjun Chauhan, the manager of Uttar Pradesh T20 League team Kashi Rudra, received a suspicious message on Instagram from an account named ‘vipss_nakrani’. The person offered the manager Rs 1 crore for fixing the match, along with promising a commission of Rs 50 lakh. The complaint was filed with the police station by Hardyal Singh Champawat, the anti-corruption manager of the UP T20 League, who is in charge of Lucknow. The complaint is said to have been filed with the police station in this regard. The complaint says that the person introduced himself as a ‘big gambler’ from an account named ‘vipss_nakrani’ on Instagram. He pressured him to contact him on WhatsApp. He said that the players would be paid in cash or dollars. In return, the players would have to play as per his instructions during the match.
The complaint further said that the gambler communicated through voice calls and messages, which were recorded in the presence of witnesses. The person repeatedly insisted that if the match result went as per his wishes, the players would be given US dollars or cash after the match.
The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit has collected screenshots, texts and audio clips of the conversation and submitted them with the complaint. After scrutiny, the ACU has concluded that this is a planned criminal conspiracy for match-fixing and illegal betting. “We have registered a case against the unidentified suspect and his associates under the Indian Penal Code,” said DCP (South Zone) Nipun Agarwal.
Agarwal also said that an investigation is underway to trace the suspect and his associates, who used an Instagram account.
The final of the UP T20 League, which started on August 17 in Lucknow, will be held on September 6. Indian national team cricketers Rinku Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are playing in this tournament.
